CIMA DI FURCIA ROSSA II (2644 Altitude)

THE ASCENT

North-western side.

Beautiful and quite demanding tour. From the peak the view over the Tofane is wonderful.

From the Lavarella mountain hut climb to the Jù de Limo (2172 m) and descend as in itinerary n. 12 to the hut at Gran Fanes (2102 m). Continue for a short section to the South, turning left in direction of the wide Valun Blanch (white gully).

Keep on the right of a visible bank and outflank it over smooth inclines heading for the northern base of Peak III. Circumvent another modest elevation (2201 m). Afterwards turn left (East) and cross the base slopes of Peak III, arriving at the the entrance of the Valun dl Fossè, a wide hollow between the peaks I, II and III, which ends with a high saddle. Complete a wide half-circle to the left and head for the steep jump at the base of the north-western side of Peaks I and II, where it appears more easily approachable and dominated by a beautiful an very visible cirque, enclosed between the Peaks I and II. After bypassing the step, climb up the cirque keeping on the left first and heading for the crest. This is accessed South-West of the fix crossroads Baccon-Barborska at 2670 m altitude, with a short ascent leaving your skis on.

WALKING TIME

4 - 6 hours

THE DESCEND

Retrace the ascent itinerary. From the peak follow the short ridge section and reach the north-western slopes which descend to the upper cirque. This is outflanked on the right, by the short terraces of Peak I lying above. Enter the bottleneck which permits the exit from the cirque. After descending the steepest slope of the base step, reach the underlying Valun dl Fossè. Descend freely in NW direction and, turning West, cross the slopes at the base of Peak III again. Always in north-western direction, circumvent the 2201 elevation and the consecutive bank exiting soon in the hollow of Gran Fanes. Follow the usual itinerary to the Lavarella hut.

TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES

  • Just like S1; some soft terrain irregularities and hollows. The descent is free
  • The slope is more marked (30° ÷ 35°). It is not always easy to proceed in a straight line; it is necessary to bend more often, the terrain opens giving a certain degree of route choice
  • Terrain very steep, narrow space, sometimes exposed. it is not possible to bend to one's liking, as the bends are imposed by the terrain difficulty and shape
  • Good skier: he can confidently engage in S3 descends; he can manage descends ot the higher difficulty type as well, as long as they are not continuous or very long

SUGGESTED EQUIPMENT

  • Ski skins

USEFUL SUGGESTIONS

  • Tour for compact snow conditions

THE ASCENT

Northern ridge

One of the most spectacular tours departing from the Gran Fanes hollow. The view from the peak is breathtaking.

From the Lavarella hut follow itinerary n. 16 until you reach the elevation at 2201 m altitude. Take a sharp turn to the right (South) and aim for a very visible and steep snowy canal which slices the tabular base of Peak III.

The canal starts from the lowest point of the rocks (2300 m altitude) and is 60 m high. It has to be climbed with the skis on the backpack. This is the hardest section of the tour. Exit at the top of the canal on a wide terrace. Put the skis back on and bypass a highly steep slope which leads to an incision between the terrace at the base and the massive main body of the mountain, represented by a long and wide ridge. Bypass the incision and, keeping in the middle of the ridge, proceed following it. At first the incline is quite steep but it constantly softens, until you reach the peak.

WALKING TIME

5 - 7 hours

THE DESCEND

Retrace the ascent itinerary. From the peak, enjoy a free and rewarding descent on the northern side. Pay attention to not diverging to much from the center of the the ridge, until you reach (be careful!) the incision which separates the large summit ridge from the underlying base. Descend the incision carefully (possibly without skis) and, turning slightly NNE, descend the steep slope below, until the entrance of the canal cutting the rocks at the base of the mountain. As for the ascent, this has to be climbed down without skis, fixing the skis to the backpack. Reach the base and enjoy a fast and free descent until the moderate elevation of 2201 m altitude and then, as in itinerary n. 16, head for the hut at Gran Fanes and the Lavarella hut.

CIMA NORD DI CIAMPESTRIN (2834 Altitude)

THE ASCENT

North-eastern side and northern ridge.

Interesting and technically varying ascent. A tour with typical mountaineering characteristics. Excellent landscape.

From the Lavarella hut, as in itinerary n. 16 until the entrance of the Valun Blanch. Immediately before circumventing from the South the elevation at 2201 m altitude, deviate slightly to the right (SSE direction), ascending the Valun Blanch and heading for the small saddle of a short rocky curb, perpendicular to the direction of the itinerary. This is the true entrance to the Valun (2300 m altitude). After the saddle you will reach after a short while the heap of boulders at the base of the northern and north-western sides of the Pizes de Ciampestrin. Manoeuvring between the rocks and ascending with sharp turns (only with settled snow) the steep slope lying above, you will exit on the side of the mountain (2600 m). Leave the skis and descend to the left, at the base of a blackish wall, and enter a steep canal which leads to the median ledge. Follow it in southern direction for 30 ms, climbing up a difficult and big step and arriving thus on the wide ridge (2700 m altitude). Follow it towards South (almost always blown-in snow) and, without big difficulties (except for a short bottleneck, reach the summit.

WALKING TIME

5 - 7 ore

THE DESCEND

Retrace the ascent itinerary. From the peak, descend the ridge, being careful when at the bottleneck mentioned above. Follow it until you almost reach the northern extremity. Turn right and descend the step to the Eastern side, thus reaching the median ledge. Still North for 30 m until entering the canal. Descend it and reach its base, continue North, climbing easily to the north-western rige. Put on the skis and descend the steep underlying slope with sharp turns, until the base. Here, take a slalom between the rocks scattered around and reach the saddle of the the rocky curb. Cross it and take a slight NNE deviation reaching, after a free and amusing descent, the elevation 2201. Follow itinerary n. 16 until Gran Fanes and then to the Lavarella hut.
