MONTE SELLA DI FANES (2656 Altitude)
THE ASCENT
Jù de S. Antone (pass) and SW side.
Classic ski touring excursion, not difficult but very interesting and rewarding.
From the Lavarella mountain hut, climb up the first, short, slope until the rim of a wide and flat hollow called Plan de Salines, right above the “Banch dai Torchi” (the characteristic side with conifers shattered on the erosion shelves). The hollow is bypassed on the right (orographic left) and after a following slope you reach a hidden gully (Val de S. Antone), enclosed by the Sas dles Nü on the West and by the Monte Sella de Fanes on the East. Climb up the valley, first northwards and then north-westwards. The last 50 ms are quite steep. If the snow is not yet really compact, than it is advised to proceed without skis and straight ahead. From Jù de S. Antone (pass) (2466 m, with wayside cross and emergency hut) proceed without skis on the SW side of the mountain towards the peak, better keeping slightly on the right of the edge of the ridge.
WALKING TIME
2 - 3 1/2 hours
THE DESCEND
First descend on the SW side (south of the ridge) until the Jù de S. Antone (pass). Put on your skis again and proceed with caution for the first 50 m. From here it is a rewarding and funny descent until the Lavarella mountain hut, skiing around the Sas dles Nü and through the Plan dles Salines (see also itinerary n. 5).
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES
- The slope is more marked (30° ÷ 35°). It is not always easy to proceed in a straight line; it is necessary to bend more often, the terrain opens giving a certain degree of route choice
- Intermediate skier: he can manage descends ot the S3 difficulty type as well, as long as they are not continuous or very long
SUGGESTED EQUIPMENT
- Ski skins
USEFUL SUGGESTIONS
- Tour for compact snow conditions
