MONTE SELLA DI FANES (2656 Altitude)

THE ASCENT

Jù de S. Antone (pass) and SW side.

Classic ski touring excursion, not difficult but very interesting and rewarding.

From the Lavarella mountain hut, climb up the first, short, slope until the rim of a wide and flat hollow called Plan de Salines, right above the “Banch dai Torchi” (the characteristic side with conifers shattered on the erosion shelves). The hollow is bypassed on the right (orographic left) and after a following slope you reach a hidden gully (Val de S. Antone), enclosed by the Sas dles Nü on the West and by the Monte Sella de Fanes on the East. Climb up the valley, first northwards and then north-westwards. The last 50 ms are quite steep. If the snow is not yet really compact, than it is advised to proceed without skis and straight ahead. From Jù de S. Antone (pass) (2466 m, with wayside cross and emergency hut) proceed without skis on the SW side of the mountain towards the peak, better keeping slightly on the right of the edge of the ridge.

WALKING TIME

2 - 3 1/2 hours

THE DESCEND

First descend on the SW side (south of the ridge) until the Jù de S. Antone (pass). Put on your skis again and proceed with caution for the first 50 m. From here it is a rewarding and funny descent until the Lavarella mountain hut, skiing around the Sas dles Nü and through the Plan dles Salines (see also itinerary n. 5).

TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES

  • The slope is more marked (30° ÷ 35°). It is not always easy to proceed in a straight line; it is necessary to bend more often, the terrain opens giving a certain degree of route choice
  • Intermediate skier: he can manage descends ot the S3 difficulty type as well, as long as they are not continuous or very long

SUGGESTED EQUIPMENT

  • Ski skins

USEFUL SUGGESTIONS

  • Tour for compact snow conditions

SAS DLES NÜ (2968 Altitude)

SAS DLES NÜ

THE ASCENT

ESE spur (Parei de Fanes) and eastern ridge

Classic and spectacular ski tour. Beware of the difficult upper section.

From the Lavarella mountain hut follow itinerary n. 4 until Plan de Salines, which is then encircled on the right to proceed towards the south-eastern incline of the Parei de Fanes (NW); from here the path follows steep inclines until reaching an area with big boulders at the base of the SE corner of the spur, which is passed by, heading ENE, in the direction of a wedge-shaped steep decline which separates the above lying rock belt (S side of Parei de Fanes). The decline is overcome with a series of close serpentines (beware of avalanche risk) until coming out on the ridge (2800 m). From here follow the ridge without skis until the fore-summit (2874 m), preferably always keeping on the southern side. The true eastern ridge of the Sas dles Nö starts from here. First it is very sharp and difficult, then it gets wider and easier to pass. Follow the ridge until the beautiful summit, an exceptional viewpoint on the Pices Fanes plateau, Val Badia and the whole Dolomites area.

WALKING TIME

2 1/2 - 4 hours

THE DESCEND

The descent route follows the ascent itinerary. From the peak descend along the ridge and the sharp crest (be careful!) until you are back on the fore-summit. Then proceed on the SE slopes of the Parei de Fanes, keeping, if possible, the southern side in view, so that you can find the entrance of the steep wedge from which you emerged when climbing up. Put your skis back on and descend through it, making sharp turns and, after reaching the base, turn left (ESE direction) until reaching and surpassing the area with big boulders. Keeping the left, descend a last steep section and then, with a wide turn to the right, enter the Plan de Salines. From here the Lavarella mountain hut is shortly reached, following the itinerary n. 4.

TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES

  • Just like S1; some soft terrain irregularities and hollows. The descent is free

  • Pay attention to the sections with snow blown in by the wind
  • Knowledge about the snow features are necessary
  • Tour for compact snow conditions
  • Possibility of avalanche risk in some sections with unfavourable snow conditions

THE ASCENT

N saddle and NNE side

Short and easy tour, perfect for beginners. From the Lavarella hut, as in itinerary n. 4, until the Plan de Salines hollow. Having reached it, make a sharp turn for the left and go for the summit following a short incline.

WALKING TIME

1 - 1 1/2 ore

THE DESCEND

Back on the saddle, start the descend, everybody picking and making his own path, without an obligated itinerary on the tempting undulating terrain. After reaching the Plan de Salines, proceed as in itinerary n. 4 until the Lavarella mountain hut.
